Hey guys, it's Dad. You know how much our family loves skiing together — but did you ever wonder who actually invented skis in the first place? There was no ski shop four thousand years ago. No chairlifts, no groomed runs, not even a word for "powder day." Today's story is about the history of skiing, and it starts in a place a lot colder than Jackson Hole.
The oldest skis ever found are so old they're kind of hard to believe. Archaeologists in Russia found a piece of a wooden ski buried in a bog that's about eight thousand years old — way older than the pyramids in Egypt. And in Norway and Sweden, there are rock carvings, basically ancient stone drawings, showing people gliding on long wooden boards that are almost six thousand years old. So skiing wasn't invented for fun, and it definitely wasn't a sport at first. It was invented because people had to get around in deep snow to hunt, to check traps, and to travel between villages, and walking through waist-deep snow is exhausting and slow. Someone figured out that a long flat piece of wood strapped to your foot spreads your weight out so you glide on top of the snow instead of sinking into it. That one idea — spread the weight out — is still the entire basic idea behind every ski made today.
The word "ski" itself comes from an old Norwegian word, "skið," which just meant a long stick or piece of split wood. For thousands of years, the people who were truly the best skiers on Earth were the Sami people, who live in the far north of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia, above the Arctic Circle. The Sami used skis every single winter to herd reindeer across huge frozen landscapes, and they got so good at it that armies eventually noticed. Norwegian and Swedish soldiers were using skis to fight winter battles as far back as the 1200s, moving whole troops across mountains and frozen lakes faster than anyone on foot, and even faster than horses could manage in deep snow.
For most of that history, though, skiing was really just one thing: skiing in a straight line, or maybe a gentle curve, mostly downhill or across flat ground, using one long pole to help balance and brake. Turning sharply, the way we do now to control our speed on a steep run, wasn't really possible yet, because the ski boots of the time were just soft leather and your heel could lift up and slide all over the place. That changed because of one very clever, very stubborn Norwegian farmer named Sondre Norheim, who lived in a region called Telemark in the mid-1800s. Norheim invented a new kind of binding, made of twisted birch root, that wrapped around the heel and held the boot much more snugly to the ski. Suddenly, skiers could shift their weight, dig an edge into the snow, and actually carve a real turn. Norheim also shaped his skis with a curve in the middle, called sidecut, so they naturally wanted to bend into a turn. This single invention, sometimes now called the "telemark turn," basically flipped skiing from just "a way to travel across snow" into something closer to what we do now — controlling your speed and direction on purpose, for fun, on purpose-built terrain.
Word of Norheim's tricks spread, and by the late 1800s skiing had turned into a real competitive sport in Norway, with the very first organized ski jumping competitions and cross-country ski races. From there, it spread south into the Alps in Switzerland, France, Austria, and Italy, where the mountains were even bigger and steeper than back home in Scandinavia, and downhill skiing as we picture it today — racing fast down a big mountain — really took off. Skiing became an official Winter Olympic sport for the very first time at the first ever Winter Olympics, held in Chamonix, France, in 1924.
There was still one huge problem left to solve, though: how do you even get up the mountain in the first place? For a long time, if you wanted to ski down a slope, you first had to hike all the way up it yourself, which is exhausting and means you only get a few runs in a whole day. The fix came from Sun Valley, Idaho, in 1936, when a railroad engineer named James Curran, working for the Union Pacific Railroad, adapted a machine originally designed for loading bananas onto boats — a looping conveyor system with hooks — into the world's very first chairlift. Skiers could now sit down, get pulled up the mountain, and ski down again and again all day long. That single invention is the reason ski resorts as we know them, with lift tickets and lift lines, exist at all.
Skiing kept getting easier and better after that. Metal edges in the 1930s made skis grip icy snow much better. In the 1950s and 60s, skis switched from solid wood to fiberglass and metal, making them lighter and stronger. Ski boots went from soft leather to hard, buckled plastic in the late 1960s, giving way more control. And in the 1990s, ski shapes changed again with something called "parabolic" or "shaped" skis — wider at the tip and tail, narrower in the middle — which made turning so much easier that whole new generations of skiers, including plenty of little kids, could learn way faster than skiers your grandparents' age ever could.
So here's what I want you to remember. Skiing wasn't invented by one genius in one flash of inspiration — it was built up slowly, over eight thousand years, by hunters trying to survive the winter, soldiers trying to move fast, a stubborn Norwegian farmer who figured out how to turn, and a railroad engineer who borrowed an idea from banana boats.
